Grand Canyon – Toroweap Point Overlook
60 miles from a paved road is arguably the most amazing places to experience the Grand Canyon. No tourists, no walls, no fences, just a 3,000 foot vertical drop to the Colorado River. Sitting on the edge with your feet dangling over the abyss makes you feel like you’re on the edge of the world. Nearby is Lava Falls trail, one of the steepest descents into the canyon, covering the vertical drop in about 1.5 miles. Not for the faint of heart, this is an amazing hike/climb though the trail is difficult to follow, it takes about 6 hours roundtrip, the footing consists of loose lava rock, and there’s no shade from the desert sun. I took a wrong turn on the ascent and ended up climbing the steepest section rather than a more moderate hike up a ravine. I was more than a little worried, having heard horror stories about this hike from every person with knowledge of it. One tale even involved someone leaving their dog behind in the canyon because they were stressed to the limit. Nevertheless, I made it out. So if you’re looking for a good adventure, look no further than Toroweap Point and the Lava Falls trail.
